Typography

The art of arrangement, style, appearance and printing of type and typefaces.

The art and technique of selecting and arranging type styles, point sizes, line lengths, line spacing, character spacing, and word spacing for typeset applications
THE PRACTICE OF VISUALLY REPRESENTING WORDS

In this weeks seminar we were set the task of looking at typogtaphy used in print and web design. Typograhpy can help in making a design great but if used wrong it can kill it intyrarly.

PROBLEMS FOR WEB TYPOGRAPHY?

• Has to work across different computer platforms and screen sizes
• The Web designer must understand issues and to address them
•Maintain some kind of control
•Line length and number of lines
•Font sizes
These are all things that need to be taken into consideration when creating a website

Serif or san sarif fonts?
For my site i will be using san serif font as i feel that it is easy to work with in web design and easyer on the eyes.

Commonly Available Sans-serif Fonts

Things to remeber
Generally, 2 fonts are sufficient in any design. Don’t forget you can use the typeface variations (bold, italic, etc) for different content areas.
Don’t mix too many fonts in a web page.Try designing a page that uses only 1 font for all text areas. You can experiment with font colour and visual hierarchy too…

    Website ideas

I lke the flash navigation used on this site although atm i have no idea on how to create this click here

Apollohq.com uses the web style i wish to replicate. Logo, navigation and a nice welcome image are used at the top of the page,
There is that a nice, clean white content block,
Followed by a black footer containing all the company info.

This site looks great although id not be able to replicate it. I like the nav on the left hand side which i could create but the style of the site im yet to understand.
DJ Pony found on unusual_navigation and created by sunderland studio

I found his personal website beneficial for both my visual essay and the digital me project. Jesse has a great portfolio of work and he has displayed it beautifully, Ill be taking inspiration from his site in order to develop my own online portfolio.

    Filming

    Today we started filming.
It went rather strangely i must say, we did get shots we needed but with only having one of the two actors it didn't go to plan.
The shots we attempted were the close up shots we were using for the opening credits. This shots were to have heavy focus on the sound, but with out a good mic to pick the sounds up we are going to struggle with the shots we have.

    Film Project - Week two

Today we pitched our film idea's.
The idea for the original script has changed some what. As originally the story was rather comical showing a guy going from flat to flat trying get food and/or possibly make friends.
Our version of the script so going down the route of being a lot more sinister and and dark. We would really like to focus on the character them selfs and have the audience question their (mainly the character MONTIE) actions.
we have ideas of the style and how we want to style the film, we will open with fast cuts switching between the two protagonists and the opening credits. We are going to focus heavily on sound to create the suspense of the situation that is occurring.
This week we got a good amount of things sorted, we have a production schedule sorted out and we all have  a better understanding of our roles within the team.  Next we will hopefully have location sorted and maybe possible actors, which i feel is our main problem.

    Haunted House Ride Evaluation UNFINISHED!

    Ok so where to start....
At the start of this project i was really willing and up for it! The idea of creating a haunted amusement ride was rather interesting while at the same time rather challenging.
I started the project by trying to come up with some ideas and themes for my ride. At the time of the project i had be playing through the game Alan Wake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Wake) which is a psychological thriller which at parts is rather intense and scary. The game its self is very dark and driven by the stories narrative which made me want to create something with more of a story rather than just a jump out and scream themed ride.
So thinking id rather have a story driven ride i started planing some kind of story i can get across in only a minute. I looked at all the common reasons for a house to be haunted, a murder an untimely death with the resident having unfinished business, a curse placed upon the house the list goes on.
In the end i came up with a story which involved the family living in a manor house out in the woods. They become tormented and eventually devoured by a giant mother snake who became threatened by the family when they moved in.
So to incorporate my story into an amusement ride i wanted to introduce the family that once lived in the house and also have the rider chased by the angry snake.

    The digital design.
I had the idea and the vision of what i wanted in my head so it was to to try create this vision in 3ds max. Iv got the basics down for 3ds max although a little rusty for not having used it sins the last term. I feel i started the project rather well although about three weeks in my project films became corrupt and with no backup i had to start from scratch. Learning for this i started making backups of the project files and making sure i was saving regularly.
As last time i still feel that the program its self is very temperamental. Sometimes everything seems to run smoothly and as i wish but other times it will almost bring me to tears with its unwillingness to corporate. I built up the different levels and the different rooms with in my 'Hunted Manor House.' Creating the rooms was fairly easy, using the wall generator it was simple and adding a nice old wallpaper texture it gave a good effect.
Originally i wanted to have a large collection of portrait paintings on the wall, but at the moment i only have the one of the main 'father figure.'
There is still a fair but to do on the ride but sins getting 3ds max at home ill be able to work on it in my spare time which will give me a lot more freedom and time to experiment with different things.
I still have to work on the animation of the snake, the way it moves, brakes through walls and moves in genera. A room full of snake eggs that hatch as the cart goes by needs to be created and the final scene where the cart escapes need to be created. Touch ups on the underground entrance and the berial ground needs to be finished.
So as you can see i still have a fair bit to do but i feel i can have it done by putting some time in over the next few weeks.
Overall i can say that the virtual environments project has been rather stressful and in the end i don't feel i have enjoyed it as much is i was hoping to at the start of the project. If i was to do it again knowing what i do now id make sure i have a clearer time frame allowing me more options to create to scenes and elements.

    Basic Story and story-bored

    Kicking off the Designing

    Cart and entrances.
For the cart i wanted something really smooth and clinical, although it doesnt fit in with the astetics of the actual ride.
After adding the camera to the track 3DS max decided to crash on me :(
Here i added some texture to my wall to give it the feel of a manor house.

    An interesting Idea

I found this video of a Haunted house level design and i really like the theme and mood set by it.
Id like to take some elements out of this and incorporate them with in my own Haunted ride.

    eXistenZ- Narrative, Interactivity and Convergence

eXistenZ (1999) is a film directed by David Cronenberg and explores the future of game design, in particular, virtual reality. The plot aimed to confuse the audience into what actually was reality, and achieve this by twisting the setting and scene frequently.

    Narrative
The Narrative of the film is constantly evolving on screen in the sense that we as the audience never know whats going to happen next. The film deals with a constant theme of reality and questions the audience about what we are actually seeing on screen.
The film is defiantly the creation of 'out the box' thinking although saying that i do feel at the end it just tries to hard to confuse you. It wants you to think about what your watching but leaves you questioning if at the end it was their reality or still 'the game world.'
I picked up on the plot twist of the first Dream/Game state by the give away of the two headed mutated creature.

    Interactivity
The director added a sense of interactivity to the audiences but making us question what we are watching by added more information as the on screen characters progress. The film drops the audience right in the deep and with no idea of whats happening. To my knowledge the film opens to the start of the game, or to what we later believe was the start. The kind of jump in to the action with out any information leave the audience confused and a little baffled to whats going on.

    Convergence
Not to sure on the meaning of Convergence but from what i can make out its the merging of ideas maybe? Im sure ill be introduced to the meaning in the coming weeks.

    Conclusion
The film is an interesting concept although i feel that it has been done better in films such as the matrix or recently inception.
